more news – part II – soccer

with the world cup looming, soccer is pretty much 'in' the news. imho, while a tournament on the grounds of an actual 'league' of champions from different countries would be far more interesting than a tournament based on nationality, the world cup is still something to look forward to. what do i mean by an actual 'league' of champions? instead of the league + KO rounds of the Champions League, a competition based purely on a 'league' basis would be more fair, although the fun / agony of being KO-ed would be missing.

The World Cup

unlike most other people, i dont have a 'favourite' nation to support. which brings up a pretty good question – just who to support? most ppl seem to support brazil, simply on the grounds that they are the likeliest to win. of course, they are outright favourites to win, but in a one-off match, the underdogs could win too, and more often than not, they do win, dont they?

now, watching a tournament as big as this without supporting some side doesnt seem to be a good idea. so, just WHO does someone support? (someone who is pretty much neutral, but is hugely biased toward Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso). some unfancied african nation, without knowing more than a couple of their players, just on the underdog grounds?

spain, perhaps, with their madman of a manager and underperforming players? italy, whose reputation is badly tarnished with the recent scandal? england, who have neither rooney nor a set formation nor even a fixed starting 11 for that matter? or perhaps germany, who didnt have a 1st choice keeper decided till a few months back, all due to their US-resident manager? or maybe argentina, whom i know very little about? france, who should be within a fair shout of winning the cup? no? perhaps some of the lesser fancied nations? sweden, paraguay, the czech republic, portugal, mexico, the netherlands, the us of a? or maybe support iran, japan or korea on the we are all asians grounds?

half a week left, and still with no team to support. sad, aint it? how does the world cup affect the club transfer market? some players are cheaper before it, or so the the clubs seem to think. most club managers claim that they want to get all their transfers done before the world cup. but judging from the actual transfers which have taken place so far, they havent been too successful in tying up players before the tournament.

The Transfer Market – Chelsea

chelsea promised their fans that they would buy 2-3 world class players, and a couple of promising youngsters. sadly, they seem to be nearly done with their transfers. first they got ballack, on a free sure, but supposedly on a 150k pounds per week wage, although they have denied this. thats some 8-mil per year, if its even true! then, they bought kalou for an 'undisclosed' fee, in the promising youngster quota of theirs. this was followed by shevchenko, supposedly for some 25-30 mil pounds, on a wage similar to that of ballack. and a couple of days back, the tied up Jon Obi Mikel, under the same promising youngster quota. and now, they are supposed to be interested in Roberto Carlos.

normally, on such a spending spree, i would just curse the club, foul mouth moaninho and abramovich, call the fans downright dumbasses to support such a team, and leave it at that. so, whats different now? the worst part is that they paid some 12 mil to ManUre for Jon Mikel Obi, who would no doubt love to go out on a little spending spree of their own and get themselves a competent central midfielder. and all this spending by chelski, a club which had a nine digit loss figure (in pounds again ~ 150 mil). damn abramovich and the bottemless pit that is his wallet.

The Transfer Market – Liverpool

apart from gonzalez and paletta, who are already bought, there have been no other confirmed signings, and apart from the sale of morientes, there has been very little activity. there are rumors, though, linking them with players for nearly every position except in the goalkeeping department, which is pretty surprising given they have a pretty solid squad, and counting ballack out, the best central midfielders in the EPL. there has been confirmed interest in Daniel Alves (right back), Dirk Kuyt (striker) apart from the constant rumors linking them with nearly every right winger in Spain. and then there are rumors of Benitez being handed a 'war-chest' of 30 mil. hope its true.

back to the world cup, i'll probably end up supporting either of Spain or England. heres hoping theres no cricket during the world cup. i mean the soccer world cup.

PS : was unable to get the post on E3 completed, its too long and unwieldy. and its mostly a collection of facts ,which makes it even more boring. this post was typed up a week and a half back, was too lazy to update and publish it.

P-PS : Hitman : Blood Money was pretty darn nice. how i love fiberwire! sadly, there was a bad, bad bug in the p0rn tycoon level. if you try to drop something from your inventory, the game crashes. as all my efforts at runnin and gunnin didnt work, i had to cheat through the level :(

P-PPS : which brings me to the main part of this blog (yes, in the 3rd PS) – who is the player to watch this world cup? the one player guaranteed to take the WC by storm? the one player to worship? in short, whos da man?

  1. Serbia seperated from Montenegro wonder how it will effect their performane in d Wc….Never thought much abt Intl Friendlies but if they r an indication den things seem to be going badly for Italy, dont expect much from them this world cup either ,they begin slowly anyways, lost to Ireland in 94 ,drew with chile in 98′(a match dat they were supposed to lose but thanks to baggio penalty…) the czechs should prove a handful in d opening round…shld scrape thru i guess but may end up with a clash with Brazil…..deir squad seems quite weak anyways…their strongest team was played off the park by Switzerland.
Germany sucks and dats coming from me….Sebastian Diesler is injured and Sebastian Kehl of dortmund “The New Kaiser” has not even made a good mark in intl football…suprised dat Klinsmann isnt using Thomas Hitzelberger..d guys got a good right foot.Christoph metzelder is my favourite me thinks u will hear more abt him in d future..really good central defender….
Holland too r a weakened squad..cant thinks of any outstandig player except for van der vaart and van bronchorst…Seijder was injured against Aust,Van Bommel is good havent seen much of Van Persie lately so cannot comment(that does not make me any less an Arsenal fan)….
Argentina… young but Messi.Tavez,Javier Maschareno,Aimar,Maxi Rodriguez r really good.Messi is back from Injury and dat should be good…Riquelme should be the playmaker…i think it could just be his WC too….

Anyways England have a excellent squad and in my opinion this is Englands World Cup to lose…..Crouch’ing’ tiger still does not satisfy me….scoring against Jamaica and Hungary is one thing….
But this is defn d best England team since 1990 defn better than that team as well which had Linekar and beer gzzling Gazza….still as u said althoug he says it Sven is still not sure of his first 11 against Paraguay
If not England then the Czechs deir semifinal material Nedved, baros,Rozisky and also karel Porbosky who has disappeared …wonder where?? any idea?? dunno if he is in any one of d top clubs anyways…….
Underdogs for me is defn Switzerland Alex Frei,Rafael Vicks .Johann Vogeland that wonderful little Philip Sendores who played out of his ski against Italy….defn an underdog along with say Ukarine or sweden

  2. another cricket hater this ‘hari’ guy … phewww
but i like the political side of him

  3. @sleeper

just because ppl like you (who seem to like cricket and hate football) exist doesnt mean that when some1 likes soccer, they too hate cricket. :D

    @hari

s.kehl is a defensive mid, right? dont they already have torsten frings and fabian ernst for that position? and i think they call hitzelsperger ‘der hammer’ cos of his left foot. and he doesnt deserve to play at the international level, he was really bad in the couple of matches i saw him play at left back.

karel poborsky is a czech? always thought of him as a croat. and i think he is 30+, so maybe he just faded. rafael vicky – some right back in the bundesliga, right? no idea about him.

  4. Sorry i got the foot of Hitzelsberger wrong ,it is indeed his left foot altough i did know he had such a knick name anyways he does have a fierce left foot….
Sleeper my man i can assure that me nor badri here hated cricket in our schooldays..infact we used to play some game with regards to guessing the names of cricketers on the last pages of our rough books durin the free periods…interests change with age u know…..

  5. damn it!! correction again,i did not know he had such a knick name…..wrt to his left foot

  6. Okay this cough syrup may be gettin to me forgetting things now…he(Hitzel’bhai’) also reminds me of Christian Ziege formerly of Tottenham Hotspurs he too was a LW and had quite a left foot …no no i am quite sure it was his left foot..good freekick taker….Torsten Frings is in poor form atleast against Japan he was…fabian Ernst no good…Arne friedrich ..nah….dats why i mentioned Diesler cos he was good on the Wings as well in that Central Midfield postion would have been an ideal support for ballack perhaps cld have chosen Mehmet Scholl as well….
Hey have u noticed that there are not many homegrown geman Players…Asamoah is from Ghana ,Podolski from poland ,Odonkor from somwhere in Africa …very un german-like

  7. @hari

forget germany, look at france – how many home grown players do they have? im not bored enough to search for the native country of all the players. the french league recruits ppl straight from academies in africa. this is the major reason that france have so many black players (or african-american players, if thats what you want to call them :D )

not many french players are actually ‘french’.

    ->Badrinath S

  8. Hey,dats true….altough not suprising that these african-french guys were the ones who were rioting last year on the streets of the cities of France.France has that reputation of earning cheap labour from Africa to do the ‘Dirty Jobs’ that the French persay wont touch… especially from once colonized Algeria ,guess that extends to Football as well….As u said for a predominantly white nation it does have a large number of coloured players.
Jerome Rothen of AS Monaco (i think now in PSG) i guess is the only good white indigenous French player to come out of their Clairefontaine Academy in a while.

  9. BTW whats ur outlook for 2nites matches.Ballacks out and that cld spell trouble.Germans good at dead ball situations n must score early.Ballack will defn be missed.certainly is d best CM in d world right now…sans ronaldinho ofcourse…
Poland and Eucador must be interesting.Dunno much abt Eucador except for some Mendez fellow…..Poland shld win dis one i guess…Sorry dat Jerzy Dudek is not in d squad well atleast hes no 1 in ur fav club
    Wots ur take??

  10. Okay not number one ,whos the no 1 GK in Liverpool FC, Carson or dat spanish fellow whose name escapes my mind right now Pope something…..
